do degus and hamsters mix?

Hi can I put a hamster in a cage with 2 degus?

Loshie 01-21-2004 01:55 PM

whats a degus?

Loshie 01-21-2004 01:56 PM

Oh, and I don't think so. Hamsters are NOT social creatures, they will fight to the death. Whatever a degus is, it WON'T mix, no matter how nice the hamster is.

A Degus is a very friendly and adorable little rodent... I have heard them called an Australian rat, and Australian gerbil ...

I would'nt...I realize I'm a way bit late on this reply, but I just found you guys:p

They will most likely double team the hamster, or the hamster will do some damage himself, or both etc...I havent actually ever had any luck imprinting my rodents onto one another *different species etc*:/

and hello all:)

Degu are adorable!! For those of you who aren't familiar with them the best description I can come up is this:

Take a chinchilla, toss in a little bit of squirrel, and some gerbil. You got a degu!! LOL.
they have hair like a chinchilla, ears like a chinchilla, a tail like a gerbil/chin cross, and bodies more like a squirrel. They are very very active animals who love to climb and jump. They require a pretty large living area to be able to actively persue their love of acrobats. They are a bit smaller than a squirrel but not as small as a gerbil.

I don't think I'd mix them with another rodent though. (ALthough I have seen them happily co-exist with rabbits believe it or not). Degu do best in pairs where as hamsters do not. Hamsters are also much more nocturnal (not to mention GRUMPY!)

I'm probably replying late, my brother at once had 9 degus and we learned quickly that they are scared of NOTHING. lol. I have a feeling that if you mix them.... bye bye hamster. o_o

Or vice versa (well, maybe just an injured degu) because hamsters hate any other animals (once the hamster is full grown), they must live alone unless they are dwarf hamsters living with siblings.
